Privacy Policy — Tab Title Renamer

Effective date: October 16, 2026

Overview

Tab Title Renamer is a Chrome extension for renaming browser tab titles, creating persistent website- or URL-specific naming rules, renaming multiple selected tabs, and saving reusable title templates. It works locally without an account.

Information processed

- Open tab information. The extension uses Chrome's tabs API to read the URLs, titles, and tab identifiers of currently open tabs. It uses these to show the bulk-rename list, identify matching website rules, and apply or restore tab titles. It does not read page body content.

- Custom names and templates. Titles, templates, rule path prefixes, website origins, and related rule identifiers are stored on the device in chrome.storage.local so saved settings survive restarting Chrome. Website origins and path prefixes can identify sites visited; do not add private tokens or other secrets to rule paths.

- Temporary per-tab overrides. The browser-assigned tab ID, custom title, and website origin are stored in chrome.storage.session to keep temporary renames through reloads. The page's original title is tracked in that page's local content-script memory to allow restoration.

How the information is used

The extension processes this data only to rename the selected tab, rename selected open tabs in bulk, match saved website/URL naming rules, restore native titles, and show user-defined templates and rules. It does not access your browsing history, passwords, form fields, messages, or webpage body text.

Permissions and website access

tabs allows displaying the URLs and titles of currently open tabs for bulk selection and URL rule matching. activeTab grants temporary access when you open the extension on a tab. scripting inserts a bundled title-maintenance script into permitted tabs. storage keeps tab overrides and saved rules/templates on the device.

The extension declares optional HTTP/HTTPS website permissions, but does not request access to every site by default. It requests permission for named websites only when you choose permanent rules or select websites for bulk renaming. You can revoke these site permissions through Chrome's extension settings, after which automatic naming for those sites stops.

Retention and user control

Saved templates and website/URL rules remain locally until deleted by you or removed with the extension's local data. Temporary per-tab overrides end when the tab closes, the tab navigates to a different website origin, or the Chrome session ends. Restore Original pauses automatic rules on that one tab for the rest of that site's tab session without deleting saved rules.

Settings are not synchronized across devices. Chrome may independently retain or remove extension local data according to browser and profile policies.

Collection, sharing, and network activity

The extension does not send tab URLs, titles, templates, rules, or other information to the developer or any third party. It has no analytics, advertising, telemetry, remote JavaScript, login, or backend API. It does not sell, share, or monetize user data. All extension operation and storage take place locally in Chrome.

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Changes to this policy

Material changes to data handling will be reflected in an updated privacy policy and in the Chrome Web Store disclosure fields.
